You are cordially invited to attend a five-day Getting to Know CMP Workshop on the beautiful campus of Michigan State University on June 21–25. This workshop is intended for teachers, coaches, teacher leaders, and administrators new to the curriculum, new to a grade level of the curriculum, or interested in receiving a more in-depth look at the mathematics and pedagogy of CMP as well as implementation strategies. It is also intended for experienced CMP teachers who want to explore the mathematics in a different grade level from that which they teach.

As an attendee you will have an opportunity to be part of a 6th, 7th, or 8th grade group that will

 

¥  Receive an in-depth look at Connected Mathematics 2 for your grade level;

¥  Examine the development of the mathematics in a grade with a focus on how understanding is developed and connected within and across units;

¥  Experience and discuss a pedagogical model for teaching CMP;

¥  Discuss implementation, management, and grading strategies;

¥  Learn about special features of CMP 2 and support resources;

¥  Participate in a special CMP carnival complete with fabulous prizes; and

¥  Share ideas with CMP teachers

 

Schedule

The conference will convene at 7:30 A.M. on Monday, June 21, with check-in and a continental breakfast. Each day will begin at 8:00 A.M. with a Continental breakfast and ends at 5:00 P.M. except Wednesday, which will end around 5:30 P.M. On Wednesday there will be a carnival with CMP games, fabulous prizes, and appetizers from 4–5:30 P.M. Lunch, except for Friday, is on your own. The conference will adjourn at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, June 25.

Confirmation

Upon receipt of your application and payment, we will send you a confirmation that will include a map. If you do not receive a reply from us, please contact us well before the conference. Please do not make flight reservations until you have received your confirmation. Enrollment is limited and attendance is not guaranteed without receipt of your confirmation.

Cancellation Policy

No refunds can be made after May 21, 2010. You may substitute another person in your place. Please notify us as soon as possible of any substitutions by e-mailing Judith Miller at miller@math.msu.edu.

Parking

The city of East Lansing offers parking near the MSU Student Union—within one or two blocks walking distance. Daily parking in the East Lansing garages will cost a maximum of $10.00 per day. Air Travel
     The Lansing community is served by a couple of airlines at the Capital Region International Airport. Their web site is www.flylansing.com. The cost of a taxi from the airport to your hotel will be about $25. You may also want to inquire as to whether your hotel provides a shuttle.
     The Marriott and Kellogg hotels provide free shuttle service to and from the Lansing airport for its guests. Call the hotel upon your arrival for this serviceÐcourtesy phones are located in the Baggage Claim area.
     It is also possible, and usually cheaper, to fly into Detroit Metropolitan Airport and take a shuttle from the Airport to the Marriott at University Place in downtown East Lansing for $50 round trip.      Flying in and out of Flint or Grand Rapids is also an option, but youÕll need to rent a car.

The MSU Student Union, Marriott Hotel, and Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center are conveniently located near Michigan State University and East LansingÕs downtown restaurants and shops. During your stay, you may want to:

á Visit MSU points of interest: Abrams Planetarium, W.J. Beal Botanical Garden, Kresge Art Museum, MSU Museum, Horticultural Gardens, free outdoor theater plays, walking paths, and the Dairy Store (homemade ice cream!).

á Attend a minor league Lugnuts baseball game in downtown Lansing: www.lansinglugnuts.com

á Take a short bus ride to malls and theaters.

á Stroll the Lansing River Trail along the Grand River as it flows through our beautiful Campus, or rent a canoe and paddle on the river.
